First awarded in 1986, the Geminis celebrate the achievements of TV members of the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television. Essentially, it presents awards for the best television productions in Canada. Awards are currently presented in 87 categories.

November 19, 2005 was also proclaimed to be "Gemini Awards 24-hour interval" by the Toronto City Quango.

The Gemini Awards also include several special awards given out for various reasons such as lifetime accomplishment.

Usually held in Toronto, the 2006 anniversary was held in Richmond, BC on November four, 2006 and the 2007 ceremony was held in Regina, Saskatchewan on October 28, 2007.

Quebec holds its ain counterpart of the Geminis, Les Prix Gémeaux.
